Title: Associate University Counsel - (VP 00000015) Category: Jobs Organiser: Southern Methodist University (SMU) – Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) Description: Southern Methodist University (SMU) is seeking a full-time Associate University Counsel to join its Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) in Dallas, Texas. The OLA is a high-volume, professional environment responsible for providing comprehensive legal services to the SMU Board of Trustees, university officers, and administrative officials. The office supports the university's mission by delivering practical, ethical, and high-quality legal advice on matters involving institutional interests. The Associate University Counsel will report to the Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel. The primary focus of this role involves advising on university research-related contracts, grant agreements, technology transfer, and intellectual property. Additionally, the successful candidate will provide legal support for commercial transactions, business operations, real estate matters, and regulatory compliance. Beyond transactional work, the appointee will assist in drafting and reviewing university policies and procedures. They will also be responsible for developing and delivering educational training programs for administrators, faculty, and staff. The role requires a collaborative professional capable of exercising sound judgment while working closely with university colleagues. Eligibility: * Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school. * Minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible legal experience as a practicing attorney (judicial clerkships count toward practice years). * Member in good standing of the Texas Bar, or eligibility to practice law in the State of Texas within one year of hire. * Strong corporate and transactional legal skills, specifically in contract drafting and negotiation. * Significant knowledge of intellectual property (IP) and research-related legal issues. * Demonstrated experience in providing legal advice within a higher education setting is preferred.
