Complete Guide: Head of Legal at Ancient Remedies

Ancient Remedies, a fast-growing direct-to-consumer (DTC) natural health and wellness publishing company, is seeking a high-ownership Head of Legal. This is a fully remote, full-time leadership role designed for an entrepreneurial legal or compliance operator who can build internal systems from scratch to protect the company while enabling rapid growth.

Role Overview & Responsibilities

Unlike traditional General Counsel roles, the Head of Legal at Ancient Remedies will focus on building an internal legal and compliance operating system. The company operates in a space subject to active Federal Trade Commission (FTC) scrutiny, making this role the first line of defense against regulatory risks. Key responsibilities include:

  • Compliance Operating System: Building and maintaining compliance workflows across marketing, customer experience, operations, privacy, IP, and contracts.
  • Advertising & Claims Review: Creating a robust claims review process and substantiation library for ads, landing pages, emails, funnels, and health-related copy.
  • Risk Mitigation: Partnering with customer support and operations to identify recurring refund or shipping issues before they escalate into legal threats.
  • Outside Counsel Management: Preparing evidence packets, tracking active matters, controlling legal spend, and translating external advice into internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • IP Protection: Overseeing trademark/copyright enforcement, managing unauthorized sellers, and executing platform takedowns.
  • Privacy & Data Compliance: Managing cookie consent workflows, pixel tracking, privacy policy updates, and data requests.

Eligibility & Candidate Profile

Ancient Remedies is looking for a systems thinker with strong judgment. Candidates do not necessarily need to be qualified lawyers; individuals from legal operations, compliance, consumer protection, or e-commerce backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates should possess:

  • Working knowledge of FTC advertising law, including substantiation standards, Endorsement Guides, and Section 5 of the FTC Act.
  • Familiarity with US consumer protection laws at both federal and state levels (UDAP statutes, state AG enforcement).
  • Experience in fast-moving consumer brands, DTC, supplements, health/wellness, or publishing sectors.
  • The ability to collaborate constructively with marketing teams to find compliant alternatives rather than simply saying "no".

Compensation & Benefits

The position offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support remote work and professional growth:

  • Competitive Salary: Benchmarked to market rates with regular performance-based reviews and bonuses.
  • Work Flexibility: 100% remote work with flexible, asynchronous hours.
  • Paid Time Off: 22 days of PTO plus 4 paid sick days (no questions asked).
  • Allowances: A one-time home office equipment budget and an annual learning allowance for courses and books.

Application Process

Interested candidates can apply directly through the official job posting on LinkedIn. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
