The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU), the largest union and professional association of registered nurses in U.S. history, is seeking a dedicated and experienced In-House Union Compliance Counsel. This full-time role is based at the union's headquarters in Oakland, California, and offers an exciting opportunity for legal professionals committed to the labor movement and social justice.
Role Overview & Key Responsibilities
The Compliance Counsel will work within the Department of the Executive Special Counsel (ESC), providing expert legal advice and regulatory compliance support directly to the Departmental Director (ESC Director). Key responsibilities include:
- DOL Compliance: Assisting with internal governance matters, union officer elections, and the preparation of LM reports and other Department of Labor reporting duties.
- Campaign Finance Compliance: Managing federal and state electoral campaign compliance, including producing and cataloging PAC financial information for political reporting and audits.
- Lobbying & Ethics Compliance: Preparing and filing state and federal lobbying reports across multiple jurisdictions.
- Nonprofit & Tax Compliance: Ensuring compliance with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(5) regulations, as well as handling annual federal and state tax reporting issues.
Eligibility & Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Education & Licensure: A Juris Doctor (JD) degree and an active bar license in California are mandatory.
- Professional Experience: At least three (3) years of experience in managing simultaneous requests, problem-solving through research, and critical thinking to achieve organizational goals.
- Soft Skills: At least three (3) years of experience managing confidential information with discretion, exercising tact and diplomacy with staff and union leadership, and demonstrating excellent communication skills.
- Preferred Qualifications: Prior compliance experience in campaign finance, federal/state lobbying, DOL regulations, and non-profit charitable tax exemptions is highly desirable.
Compensation, Location, & Benefits
This position is located at the CNA/NNU headquarters in Oakland, CA, with limited opportunities for remote work. The organization offers a highly competitive compensation package:
- Salary Range: $127,591 to $170,985 annually, commensurate with skills and experience.
