Canva, the global design platform with over 250 million users, is seeking a sharp, business-minded Senior Commercial Counsel to join its Commercial Legal team in London, United Kingdom. This full-time role is embedded within Canva's Go-To-Market (GTM) teams, focusing on reviewing and negotiating high-volume commercial agreements across enterprise, higher education, government, and strategic partnerships. The position operates under a hybrid working model based out of Canva's London campus in Shoreditch.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in enabling strategic growth in the EMEA region and beyond. Primary duties include:
- Contract Negotiation: Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating commercial agreements with customers, resellers, and channel partners, including enterprise SaaS transactions, AI terms, and Data Processing Agreements (DPAs).
- Cross-Border Transactions: Supporting international transactions across Canva's group companies, navigating local legal and regulatory considerations within EMEA.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Providing timely, practical, and solutions-oriented legal advice to Sales, Success, Finance, Deal Desk, Security, and Privacy teams.
- Process Optimization: Contributing to contract templates, playbooks, and escalation guides, while implementing scalable improvements to contracting workflows and tools.
- AI Integration: Embracing and implementing generative AI tools and workflows to work smarter and faster, and understanding GenAI fundamentals to support sales contracts.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this senior-level position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Professional Qualification: Must be qualified to practice law in a relevant EMEA jurisdiction (e.g., United Kingdom or an EU member state).
- Professional Experience: A minimum of 8+ years of in-house legal experience, primarily at a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or fast-growth technology company.
- Core Competencies: Proven hands-on experience negotiating complex enterprise SaaS transactions, DPAs, and AI-related terms, alongside excellent communication and prioritization skills.
Preferred Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following qualifications will give candidates a competitive edge:
- Familiarity with Canva’s product offerings and SaaS business models.
- Experience utilizing modern contracting tools such as Ironclad and DocuSign.
- Demonstrated interest or practical experience in using AI tools in a legal or operational setting.
- Multilingual capabilities, with proficiency in German and/or French being highly valued.
