The company is currently seeking a strategic and adaptable Legal Counsel to join its legal team in Sydney, Australia, under a flexible hybrid working model.
Role Overview & Key Responsibilities
As Legal Counsel, you will serve as a trusted advisor, helping to guide product innovation, commercial partnerships, and strategic business decisions. Working closely with cross-functional stakeholders, you will provide practical, risk-based legal advice to enable business objectives while navigating complex regulatory landscapes. Key responsibilities include:
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements, with a primary focus on technology contracts and regulated service offerings.
- Providing ad hoc legal advice on Australian financial services and credit laws, AFSL obligations, AML/CTF requirements, consumer protection, marketing compliance, privacy, and emerging cryptocurrency regulations.
- Supporting legal reviews of product, marketing, sales, and operational initiatives.
- Identifying legal risks in strategic projects and developing robust mitigation strategies.
- Managing relationships with external counsel, regulators, and counterparties.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of internal legal processes, templates, and governance frameworks.
Eligibility & Requirements
To be successful in this role, candidates must possess the following qualifications and skills:
- Bar Admission: Admitted to practice law in an Australian jurisdiction.
- Experience: Approximately 2 to 5 years of post-qualification experience (PQE), ideally gained within a commercial law firm and/or an in-house legal department.
- Contract Expertise: Proven experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements, particularly technology contracts.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with Australian financial services, consumer protection, privacy, AML/CTF, or regulatory frameworks is highly regarded (though not mandatory).
- Soft Skills: Strong commercial judgment, excellent stakeholder management skills, and the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal business units.
