Mott MacDonald, a prestigious employee-owned global engineering, management, and development consultancy, is inviting applications for the position of Legal Counsel. This permanent, full-time role is situated within the Group Legal Department and is primarily focused on supporting the Europe and UK (EUNA) infrastructure consultancy business. While the preferred base for this role is Croydon, Mott MacDonald supports agile and hybrid working, allowing the successful candidate to operate from other UK offices, including Leeds, London, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Cambridge, Reading, or Brighton, with a requirement for regular visits to the Croydon head office.
Key Responsibilities
The appointed Legal Counsel will collaborate with the Regional General Counsel – EUNA and Senior Legal Counsels to manage a diverse portfolio of legal matters. Key duties include:
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex construction documentation, including consultancy agreements, construction contracts, framework agreements, collateral warranties, novation deeds, and parent company guarantees.
- Advising project teams on compliance with corporate governance and assisting in securing internal approvals for departures from standard terms.
- Providing legal counsel on applicable laws, regulations, litigation, and insurance matters, including coordinating with external counsel and technical experts.
- Maintaining and updating standard legal templates and guidance notes.
- Supporting specialized legal divisions such as Ethics and Compliance, and Privacy and Data Protection, on construction-related issues.
Eligibility & Candidate Profile
Candidates applying for this position must meet the following professional criteria:
- Qualifications: Qualified Solicitor in England and Wales with extensive years of Post-Qualification Experience (PQE). Qualifications from other common law jurisdictions will also be considered.
- Experience: Proven track record in UK and international transactional construction law, gained either in-house or within a reputable private practice representing major contractors, engineers, or architects. Experience in construction disputes and insurance is highly desirable.
- Skills: Strong analytical, drafting, and negotiation skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and communicate effectively with senior stakeholders.
- UK Immigration: Applicants must possess existing right to work in the UK. Mott MacDonald is not offering Skilled Worker visa sponsorship for this role.
