Opportunity Overview: Legal Counsel at Munich Re Specialty
Munich Re Specialty – Global Markets (MRS-GM) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Legal Counsel to join its team on a full-time, permanent basis. This position is open to candidates looking to work out of either their London or Manchester offices, offering a flexible hybrid working model of 2 to 3 days per week from the office. The role is designed for an experienced professional who will act as a trusted advisor to the business, providing cross-disciplinary legal expertise across the UK and London specialty insurance markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Advisory: Advise on complex (re)insurance law issues, including wordings, delegation, and distribution contracts.
- Product Support: Assist commercial and product teams with wordings and governance processes, including regulatory considerations for new products and emerging areas.
- Regulatory & Compliance: Provide guidance to the compliance team on complex regulatory and sanctions matters.
- Litigation & Disputes: Advise on contentious matters, including non-claims litigation and investigations.
- Collaboration: Work closely with Munich Re Corporate Underwriting and other group lawyers to ensure alignment with group-wide guidelines and policies.
- Training & Templates: Develop template contracts and deliver training to share legal knowledge across the business.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Professional Qualification: Must be a qualified lawyer in England or another common law jurisdiction. Dual or additional legal qualifications are considered advantageous.
- Experience: 5 to 6 years of Post-Qualification Experience (PQE) in private practice specializing in insurance. In-house experience is welcome but not mandatory.
- Industry Knowledge: A comprehensive understanding of and experience working within the UK insurance industry and Lloyd's is essential. Experience in the European insurance market is a plus.
- Academic Background: Minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree. If a conversion course was taken, at least a commendation is required.
- Skills: Strong drafting, negotiation, research, and communication skills, with a commercial mindset and the ability to work collaboratively.
