Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a prominent non-profit legal organization, is seeking a highly skilled and mission-aligned Legal Counsel to join its Center for Christian Ministries team. This full-time role is available at ADF's offices in either Scottsdale, AZ or Lansdowne, VA. The position offers a unique opportunity to lead strategic litigation defending the First Amendment rights of churches, Christian ministries, and religious schools.

Key Responsibilities

The Legal Counsel will operate with minimal oversight from senior attorneys to advance and defend religious freedom. Primary duties include:

  • Conducting in-depth legal research and interviewing clients and witnesses.
  • Preparing and responding to written discovery, as well as conducting and defending depositions.
  • Developing case strategies, arguments, and testimony in preparation for trial and appellate presentations.
  • Representing clients in state and federal courts, as well as before quasi-judicial or administrative government agencies.
  • Collaborating with and advising allied attorneys on complex constitutional law issues.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet the following professional and academic standards:

  • Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Bar Admission: Active license in at least one U.S. state bar, with the capability to meet admission requirements in the relevant local jurisdiction within one year.
  • Experience: A minimum of 2+ years of complex litigation experience. Prior trial experience is highly preferred.
  • Mission Alignment: Candidates must review and align with ADF's Statement of Faith to ensure organizational fit.
