Legal Counsel - Credit & Surety - Hybrid

About the Opportunity

Swiss Re Corporate Solutions (CorSo) is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Legal Counsel - Credit & Surety to join its global legal team. This hybrid role is based in Chicago, IL, or Kansas City, MO, and offers an exceptional opportunity to provide transactional, regulatory, and legal support to the North America (NA) Credit & Surety business unit. The unit underwrites insurance primarily in surety, trade finance, project & infrastructure finance, commodity finance, and political risk.

Key Responsibilities

As the principal legal advisor to the Credit & Surety business in the US and Canada, the selected candidate will:

• Provide pragmatic legal advice to enable business growth in compliance with state and insurance laws.
• Act as a subject-matter expert in NA Contract and Commercial Surety, including drafting and negotiating bond forms, indemnity agreements, co-surety agreements, and agency agreements.
• Support underwriters throughout the transaction life cycle, facilitate closings, and advise on restructuring or unwinding transactions.
• Advise on licensing and regulatory issues and manage regulatory relationships.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders (Finance, Tax, Compliance, Risk, and Underwriting) to ensure holistic risk mitigation.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates applying for this position must meet the following requirements:

• Bar Admission: Admitted to the bar of at least one state in the United States (preferably Illinois, Kansas, or Missouri).
• Experience: A minimum of 6 years of legal experience in a large law firm setting or a financial services organization.
• Specialization: Specific experience with credit insurance, surety bonds/guarantees, or banking/finance is highly preferred.
• Skills: Proven ability to analyze complex issues in ambiguous circumstances, strong contract drafting/negotiation skills, and excellent communication capabilities.

Compensation and Work Structure

• Salary Range: The estimated base salary range for this position in Chicago, IL, and Kansas City, MO, is $156,000 to $210,000 per annum, determined by factors such as location, qualifications, and experience. Swiss Re utilizes a total compensation approach, including base pay, short- and long-term incentives, and benefits.
• Work Model: This is a hybrid role. Employees are expected to work from the office three days per week.
