This full-time position is based at the company's global headquarters in London, United Kingdom, and operates under a hybrid working model.
About the Role
The successful candidate will join the regulatory vertical of Checkout.com's expanding London Legal team. As Legal Counsel, you will collaborate closely with various business units to solve complex legal challenges, advise on compliance with financial services and payments regulations, and support the implementation of broad regulatory projects and product launches across the global group.
Key Responsibilities
- Regulatory Relations: Support and manage relationships with regulators on licensing matters, including potential de novo applications.
- Product Compliance: Review payments product structures, flows, and terms to ensure strict compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Advisory: Provide expert advice on UK and international payments laws, licensing strategies, and broader financial services regulations.
- Market Expansion: Advise on market expansion by researching new territories, evaluating regulatory landscapes, and applying for or expanding licenses.
- Strategic Projects: Provide proactive, creative, and results-oriented legal advice to support the company's strategic initiatives and manage cross-border risks.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Professional Qualification: Must be a qualified solicitor/lawyer with 3 to 7 years of Post-Qualification Experience (PQE) gained either in-house or within private practice.
- Domain Expertise: Strong understanding of legal principles applicable to payments in the UK, including the payments ecosystem and regulatory/licensing execution.
- Preferred Experience: Prior experience in FinTech, payments, software, e-commerce, banking, or fast-paced startup environments is highly desirable but not mandatory.
- Skills: Proven ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, manage a diverse workload, and communicate complex legal issues clearly and concisely.
