Title: Legal Counsel - Shipping & Maritime (Commercial & Corporate Secretarial) Category: Jobs Organiser: Caliber8 Recruitment (on behalf of a European ship owner) Description: The Legal Counsel will serve as a key member of the Legal and Compliance Team for a European ship owner headquartered in Singapore. The role involves providing comprehensive legal support and risk management services to the group and its associated entities. Working closely with the General Counsel, executive offices, and functional department heads, the Legal Counsel will address a wide range of day-to-day legal issues and supervise the work of junior lawyers within the team. The position entails a diverse portfolio of responsibilities, including the negotiation of commercial contracts such as service, supplier, and novation agreements. The successful candidate will also manage disputes relating to charter parties and shipbuilding contracts, assist in corporate finance transactions, and support the establishment of new foreign subsidiaries. Furthermore, the role involves overseeing company secretarial duties, including drafting board minutes and powers of attorney, while identifying areas for process improvement within the group’s legal framework. Eligibility: * Formal legal qualification at University Degree level or above. * Qualified as a practicing lawyer in England and Wales, Singapore, or another common law jurisdiction. * Minimum of 5 years of relevant direct working experience in the legal department of an international business or a professional law firm. * Experience in the shipping industry is preferred but not essential. * Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a team. * Demonstrated commercial awareness and the ability to develop proposals that mitigate legal risk.
