Contextual Overview

GEICO, a member of the Berkshire Hathaway family of companies and one of the largest auto insurers in the United States, is seeking an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in New York courts and handle first-party insurance defense matters. The position is based with GEICO Staff Counsel in Melville, NY, focusing on matters in Nassau County.

Key Eligibility Criteria

• Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree required.
• Licensure: Admission to the New York Bar required; must be licensed in good standing and maintain CLE requirements.
• Experience: 2 to 6+ years of litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury required.
• Preferred: Civil litigation experience and insurance defense-related litigation experience.
• Sponsorship: GEICO will not sponsor new applicants for employment authorization.

Responsibilities & Scope of Work

• Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
• Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department.
• Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath.
• Defend matters by trial or dispositive hearing as applicable.
• Travel as required for trials, hearings, depositions, and management meetings.

Compensation

Base Pay Range: $118,900.00 - $186,550.00 per year.
Note: Actual pay is based on skills, experience, scope of role, and market considerations.
