Contextual Overview

BYD North America is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to oversee all legal matters related to its operations in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This role acts as a strategic legal advisor to senior management and business teams, ensuring full compliance with applicable laws and regulations while managing commercial risk in the automotive sector.

Key Eligibility Criteria

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in law from a recognized university.
• Bar Admission: Admission to the Bar in Canada or another common law jurisdiction.
• Experience: Minimum 8 years of legal experience as in-house counsel or within a reputable international law firm.
• Language: Excellent communication skills in both English and French (written and spoken).
• Assets: Experience in the automotive, mobility, or industrial sector and cross-border transactions.

Responsibilities & Scope of Work

• Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on complex commercial agreements (automotive finance, dealer and distributor agreements, fleet sales, supply, procurement, and after-sales service contracts).
• Provide day-to-day legal and risk management advice across business units.
• Support corporate compliance programs, governance, and regulatory updates impacting the Canadian automotive industry.
• Manage legal disputes, claims, litigation, and coordination with external counsel.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Finance, Procurement, Network Development, HR, and Operations teams.
