Contextual Overview

The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS), the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, is seeking a full‑time Legal Counsel to provide strategic legal advice on nonprofit governance, healthcare, regulatory, corporate, and operational matters.

Key Eligibility Criteria

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
• Admission to practice law in Massachusetts
• 5‑8 years of relevant legal experience (large‑firm, nonprofit, healthcare, corporate, or in‑house)
• Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit governance, healthcare law, commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, and corporate law

Responsibilities & Scope of Work

• Provide legal counsel on healthcare, nonprofit governance, regulatory, corporate, employment, and operational matters
• Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret a wide range of commercial agreements
• Support Continuing Medical Education (CME) program compliance and accreditation
• Handle medical‑practice inquiries from MMS members
• Advise on medical‑malpractice tribunal responsibilities
• Manage relationships with outside counsel, including strategy coordination and invoice review
• Serve as legal advisor to committees, task forces, and governance bodies
• Perform other assigned duties

Stipend, Compensation & Mode

Target base pay: $140,000 – $160,000 (commensurate with experience). The role is paid and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
