Contextual Overview

The State of Utah Labor Commission is recruiting a full-time Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) for its Adjudication Division in Salt Lake City, Utah. This writing- and research-intensive role involves managing a caseload of workers' compensation claims, contested workplace safety cases, employment and housing discrimination claims, and failure-to-insure penalties. The position follows a hybrid work structure requiring at least two days per week in the downtown Salt Lake City office.

Key Eligibility Criteria

• Educational & Licensing Requirement: Juris Doctorate (J.D.) and an active membership in the Utah State Bar.
• Experience (Preferred): At least three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
• Domain Expertise (Preferred): Experience in litigation/trials, formal administrative hearings, the Utah Administrative Procedures Act (UAPA), workers' compensation law, occupational safety and health law, or employment law.
• Background Check: Candidates must successfully pass a criminal history check.

Responsibilities & Scope of Work

• Conduct formal administrative hearings and preside over witness examinations, testimony, and evidence.
• Evaluate evidence, rule on admissibility, issue subpoenas, hold pre-hearing conferences, and approve settlement agreements.
• Issue written orders, determinations, and legally sufficient decisions within specified timeframes (60 days).
• Maintain and manage cases involving workers' compensation, workplace safety, and discrimination.
• Defend decisions in subsequent legal proceedings if challenged.

Stipend, Compensation & Mode

• Compensation: $49.00 – $60.00 hourly wage.
• Benefits: Full benefits package eligible.
• Work Mode: Hybrid (Minimum 2 days per week at 160 East 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111).
